Does My Crown Require Any Special Care or Maintenance?

A crown represents a significant investment in oral health and functionality. When properly cared for and maintained, they can potentially last a lifetime. Even though a crown is not subject to tooth decay like natural teeth, they still do require regular brushing and flossing. This is especially true if you have struggled with periodontal disease in the past.

It’s important to keep in mind that bacterial buildup of tartar can still affect the health of the gum tissue. Over time, this can develop into periodontal disease. Advanced periodontal disease, also known as periodontitis, can cause the loss of bone in the parts of the jaw that anchor the abutment that holds your crown in place.

Crowns that are made from a porcelain ceramic material do a very good job of resisting stains. When the crown of your implant was made, it was matched to the surrounding teeth. Tobacco use and drinks, like coffee and tea, can cause deep staining in your remaining natural teeth. With prolonged deep staining, your remaining teeth might not perfectly match the color and tone of the crown.

Tobacco use can also harm gum tissue and cause infection, which could cause problems with the way the abutment anchors into your jaw.

Visiting your dentist twice a year for your cleaning and checkup will help maintain gum health and polish away surface staining before it can progress to the point where it causes matching issues.
